Summary

  • During the early 19th century, the Russian Orthodox Church turned its attention to missionary work within Russia, particularly in the remote areas of Siberia and the Russian Far East. The missionary effort was part of a larger drive to introduce the culture and language of European Russia to the native peoples that lived in these areas. Several missionary societies were established as part of this process, including the Altay (Altai) Spiritual Mission, founded by Makarii (Mikhail Yakovlevich Glukharev, 1792-1847) in 1830 in the village of Biysk. This overview discusses the accomplishments of the mission, which at the time it was written involved several missionary communities, schools, and hospitals. The book was published in 1865 and is dedicated to the founders of the first domestic missionary society. It is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. It was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s. World Digital Library.
