Summary
- The short book presented here, part of a three volume work on the history of relations between Russia and Asia, focuses on northern Japan. It contains the second and third parts of volume 2 and covers the history of the first relations between Russian and Japan and reflections on those relations in the context of life in northern Japan. The author, Dmitrii Matveevich Pozdneev (1865-1937), was a respected Russian Asia expert. He was born into a large priestly family and began his studies at the Kiev Theological Seminary. His first work was on the history of Christianity in Central Asia. For a time Pozdneev concentrated his research on China, where he lived for several years and worked on a survey of Chinese ports. He also established the Beijing Russian Language Institute. After the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5, he moved to Japan, where he created the first Russian dictionary of Japanese. Following the Russian Revolution, he taught Asian studies at universities in Leningrad and Moscow, with a focus on the history and economics of China and Japan. He was killed in the Great Purge in 1937. Several of his children also became experts on Asia and continued his work. This book is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. It was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s.
