Summary
- This book, published in Russian in Kiev (present-day Ukraine) in 1890, describes the life and work of Bishop Vladimir (1852-1931), who served as the head of the Russian Orthodox mission to North America in the years 1888-91. Vladimir's appointment to the post on December 20, 1887, ended a six-year period during which the mission had been governed from Saint Petersburg. Vladimir's official title was archbishop of the Aleutians and Alaska, but he was also active in Orthodox matters in other parts of the United States. He composed liturgical music for the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in San Francisco and traveled widely throughout the country. He mediated the acceptance into the Russian Orthodox Church of Slavic immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire who had settled in the Midwest. These immigrants were Eastern Catholics, or Uniates--Christians who follow the Eastern Orthodox liturgy but are in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. This account of Vladimir's work was based on his letters as well as reports of him written in American newspapers; it first appeared in the magazine Rukovodstvo dlia sel'skikh' pastyrei (Guidance for rural pastors). The book was digitized at the National Library of Russia in the early 2000s for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project. World Digital Library.
