Summary
- Povestvovanie o Sibiri (Narrative on Siberia) contains the printed text of a Latin manuscript about the history and culture of Siberia compiled around 1680. The author was Yurii Krizhanich, a Catholic missionary from Croatia who traveled to Russia in 1659 on an early Pan-Slavic mission aimed at helping unite the different Slavic nations under the Russian tsar as a bulwark against Protestant Germany and Muslim Turkey. The manuscript is noteworthy because of its early provenance. This edition, published in 1822, includes a translation into Russian as well as selected annotations. It presents the text in both Latin and Russian in two parallel columns on each page. Reflecting his own ethno-political passions, Krizhanich often wrote in a melded "Slavonic" language that included multiple elements of different Slavic languages. He did not use this practice in this volume, however. Krizhanich failed to inspire the Russian authorities with his idealism, and instead within two years of his arrival in Russia he was arrested and sent to Siberia. He lived for the next 15 years in Tobolsk, where he wrote and became an expert on Siberia. This book provides a general, albeit brief, overview of key Siberian themes as they existed in the first century of Russian rule over the region. It includes an understandably sketchy geographic survey of the known parts of Siberia, from the Ural Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, with a description of the major rivers and uplands and the few towns spread across the landmass to that point. The work also provides a brief historical outline of the initial Russian conquest of Siberia in the late 16th century by the Cossack hetman, Yermak Timofeyevich (1532-85). The account is very generous to Tsar Ivan the Terrible (1530-84), and presents in rather deterministic fashion the sweep of Russian control across Eurasia as a seemingly inevitable historical outcome. Such conclusions clearly reflected the political views and goals of its Croatian and Pan-Slavist author. There are watermarks on several of the pages towards the end of the volume.
