Summary
- Nastoiashchee i budyshchee pravoslaviia v Amerike (The present and future of Orthodoxy in America) presents the text of a lecture delivered in Saint Petersburg in 1897 by the Russian theologian Aleksandr Pavlovich Lopukhin (1852-1904). The topic of the lecture is the state of Orthodoxy in America, a subject with which Lopukhin had first-hand experience. He had served as a priest attached to the Russian consulate in New York in 1879-81 and was considered knowledgeable about the condition of Russian Orthodox missions in North America. Although Lopukhin had a generally negative view of the development of Christianity in the West, he believed that Eastern and Western Christians could find points of unity--primarily on the basis of the Orthodox traditions that remained in the Western practice. After his return from New York, Lopukhin taught comparative theology and history at his alma mater, the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy. He is best known as the creator of the Lopukhin Bible, a Bible with extensive commentary published in 12 volumes between 1904 and 1913. This text was digitized at the National Library of Russia in the early 2000s for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project. World Digital Library.
