Summary

  • Shown here is a portrait of the Armengol Arajol family, taken in La Massana, Andorra, circa 1916-18. Little is known about the family or about the photographer, Josep Luís Molné Salines (1881-1967). The house where such a family lived (perhaps together with any servants and laborers) would be the backbone of their lives. It would form part of the undivided established inheritance with the other assets related to agropastoral activities, such as buildings, land, and animals, which passed into the hands of a single hereter (heir or heiress), ensuring transmission from one generation to the next. Other siblings had to leave the house or remain single. The master of the house assumed authority within the family unit and before community institutions. La Massana is one of seven parishes in the principality, located on its west side, abutting the borders with France and Spain. The area is largely rural and includes the tallest mountain in Andorra, Pic de Coma Pedrosa, at 2,943 meters above sea level. Large flocks of sheep and goats from Spain and France often summer in Andorra. La Massana is also the name of the largest town in the parish.
