Summary

  • The literary and art magazine Luz (Light), published in 18 issues between mid-November 1897 and late December 1898, expressed the innovative force of the modernists, mainly in its graphic design. It was a slim and refined publication, in a long format (365mm x 155mm) that clearly showed the wish for change with respect to inherited culture. It was the first magazine of the modernist movement to incorporate a variety of text fonts and daringly bold compositions. It is considered the forerunner of the representative magazines Quatre Gats (1899), Pèl & Ploma (1899-1903), and Joventut (1900-1906), all of which are held by the Biblioteca de Catalunya. Founded by Josep Maria Roviralta and Darío de Regoyos, it contains many contributions by Roviralta, who promoted the publication, was its editor, and provided illustrations. Among the literary contributors were Santiago Rusiñol, Enric de Fuentes, Jaume Massó i Torrents, Josep Alarden, Joan Maragall, and Adrià Gual. Among the illustrators were Isidre Nonell, Eveli Torent i Marsans, Ricard Opisso, Alexandre de Riquer, Miquel Utrillo, Jaume Pahissa, Ramon Pichot, and Josep M. Bofill i Pichot. Shunning localism, the magazine distinguished itself with, for example, a special issue dedicated to French painter Puvis de Chavannes following his death. Luz published the first chapter of Les flambeaux noirs, an 1891 work by the Belgian Symbolist poet Émile Verhaeren, illustrated and translated by Regoyos. The magazine is remarkable for its headline and its etchings, both woodcuts and photoengravings, and the advertisements with borders and a variety of text fonts. Luz also included printed music, such as an extract of Els segadors (The reapers), harmonized by Josep Lapeyra. The language of the magazine was Castilian, with a few contributions in Catalan. Shown here is the first issue, dated November 15, 1897.
