Summary

  • Geograficheskii leksikon Rossiiskogo gosudarstva (Geographical lexicon of the Russian state) is a compendium of important natural and cultural landmarks in the Russian Empire. Published in 1773 in the early part of the reign of Catherine the Great (1729-96), the work is dedicated to the Russian empress and her son, the future emperor Paul I (1754-1801). The initial page displays a double-headed eagle, the symbol of the Russian tsars. The book includes entries arranged in alphabetical order for a wide variety of sites and natural features, including rivers, mountains, lakes, seas, cities, factories, monasteries, and fortresses. Some entries contain statistics on size, distance (in versts, the tsarist-era unit of distance equal to approximately 1.07 kilometers) or population measures by class or occupation where applicable. They also include short descriptive material about each place as well as brief historical information where appropriate and distances to other major nearby geographical locations or regional cities. The information about proximity to Moscow and Saint Petersburg provides convenient points of reference that help in understanding the vast sweep of the Russian Empire. There is a table with geographic coordinates of latitude and longitude for select entries at the end of the lexicon. The scholar who supervised this work was Gerhard Friedrich Müller, a prominent German historian and ethnographer who worked in Russia for most of his career. Müller was famous for his role in the Great Northern Expedition (1733-43), which explored the easternmost reaches of the Russian Empire, including the Kamchatka Peninsula and Alaska (Russian America). Vitus Bering's second voyage to Alaska in 1741, in which he finally sighted land, was a part of this larger scientific endeavor. World Digital Library.
