Summary

  • The Thereza Christina Maria collection is composed of 21,742 photos assembled by Emperor Pedro II (1825-91) throughout his life and donated by him to the National Library of Brazil. The collection covers a wide variety of subjects. It documents the achievements of Brazil and Brazilians in the 19th century and also includes many photographs of Europe, Africa, and North America. The collection contains photographs showing the construction of the railroad in the southern state of Paraná from Paranagua to Curitiba, divided into three sections: Paranaguá-Morretes, Morretes-Roça Nova, and Roça Nova-Curitiba. This work was a landmark in Brazilian engineering, winding over the Serra do Mar mountain range. In 1884, Marc Ferrez (1843-1923), a Brazilian artist of French heritage, photographed the Paranagua-Curitiba railroad and produced an album entitled The Paraná Railway. The album, which consisted of 14 panoramic views of the railroad, was presented to Emperor Pedro II by the engineer in charge of construction on the project, Francisco Pereira Passos.
