Title
- The Luminous Treasure with Acceptable Answers to Matters of Faith.
Summary
- Aḥmad ibn ʻAbd al-Laṭīf ibn Aḥmad al-Bashbīshī (1631--85) was an Islamic jurist of the Shāfiʻī school of jurisprudence. He was born and died in the village of Bashbīsh in the region of Al-Mahalla in the Nile delta of Egypt. He studied Islamic jurisprudence in Cairo and taught at the Cairo-based Al-Azhar Mosque, long considered the foremost institution in the Islamic world for the study of Sunni theology. Al-Tuhfa al-Saniyya bi Ajwibat al-Masaa'il al-Mardhiyya (The luminous treasure with acceptable answers to matters of faith) is a collection of writings on a variety of issues pertaining to the personal practice of Islam, together with the answers to those questions. The work begins by spelling out all the questions, and then proceeds to respond to the issues one by one, citing the Qurʼan and the hadith (Muhammad's traditions) to support the answers. Some of the matters addressed include the question of what was Allah's first-ever creation; whether Muhammad's prophecy and message were one or two things; whether Muhammad's traditions were his own or rather a Divine Revelation; and a host of questions about the angels, the day of judgment, the afterlife, and other matters. It is stated in the introduction that the work was commissioned by the Ottoman ruler of Egypt at the time, ʻAbd al-Raḥmān Pasha al-Tuwaishī (reigned 1650--52).
