Samuel Powell and Company. Ship and House Work in Tin, Copper, Brass and Iron
This advertising print from 1847 shows the narrow, four-story storefront of Samuel Powell & Company, situated on an incline at 8 Market Street in Philadelphia. Tea kettles, coffee pots, and other metal cookware adorn the shop window. A sign between the second and third stories proclaims the specializations of the firm, namely “Ship & House Work in Tin, Copper, Brass & Iron.” North of this sign hangs an advertisement made out of an oil can and labeled, "Oil Cans." A railing on a slant is visible in front of the store. Powell operated from this address from 1846 to 1853. The artist and the lithographer of this rather basic print are unknown.
