Faux Kufi Qurʼan Fragment

This piece constitutes a modern forgery of an early (ninth−tenth century) Qurʼan. Written in imitation Kufi script in black and red ink on a beige paper, the text panel is framed with an illuminated border possibly cut out from an older Persian manuscript. The text and illuminated border are pasted to a larger brown sheet of paper backed by cardboard. These kinds of reproductions have appeared on the art market and seem to originate from one particular workshop engaged in imitating older Qurʼans and decorating them with illuminations salvaged from Persian manuscripts.
