It is Essential that the Last Blows Achieve Victory! Subscribe to the War Loan!

This World War I poster showing a medieval warrior about to slay a roaring lion was published by the newspaper of the German Tenth Army in 1918. It calls upon Germans to subscribe to the latest German war loan as a way of achieving final victory over the Allies, which included Britain, France, and the United States. The Tenth Army was formed in 1915 from units transferred from the Western front and played a major role in battles on the Eastern front with Russia, which by late 1917 had been defeated and was seeking, under the new Bolshevik government, a separate peace with Germany and Austria-Hungary. This rare poster is from the Rehse-Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a collection of posters, pamphlets, and all types of German propaganda material that was assembled in Munich by Friedrich J.M. Rehse (1870–1952). The collection was confiscated by U.S. military intelligence authorities in 1945–46, after Germany’s defeat in World War II, and transferred to the Library of Congress.
