Summary

  • Archbishop Veniamin of Irkutsk and Nerchinsk (born Vasilii Antonovich Blagonravov, 1825-92) was for many years the leading missionary in the area of Siberia east of Lake Baikal. He was a proponent of Christianizing the local Buryat people and promoting the culture and language of European Russia among them. Veniamin saw the baptism of the local population, who were mostly Buddhist, as critical for the Russification of Siberia. This collection of letters written by Veniamin describes the work in the missionary field and the people with whom the missionaries lived and worked. The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior at the village of Posol'skoye on the shores of Lake Baikal was the seat of the Transbaikal mission from 1862-80, and it was Veniamin's base. During his time at the monastery, Veniamin established a school for Buryat boys to be trained as missionaries and translators of Russian Orthodox texts into local languages. The letters were published by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in Saint Petersburg in 1865. The work is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg and was digitized in the early 2000s for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project.
