Summary

• This hagiographic text tells the story of the life and work of Mikhail Glukharev (1792-1847), who took the monastic name Makarii. As a missionary to the Altai Mountains in southwest Siberia, Makarii played an important role in the expansion of the Russian Orthodox Church into Siberia in the early 19th century. Makarii was an Old Testament scholar and a linguist who translated a number of Old Testament texts into local languages. In the process, he discovered that there was not a complete Russian translation of the Old Testament; creating one became his life's work. During his time in Siberia, Makarii established five Orthodox settlements and a number of schools. He also was known for his support for women missionaries. Makarii was canonized as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000. Published in the town of Biysk in the Altai Krai of Russia in 1893, the book is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. It was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s. The book erroneously dates Makarii's death to 1849. World Digital Library.
