A Short History of the American Island of Kodiak
Kratkoe opisanie ob amerikanskom ostrov Kad’iak (A short history of the American island of Kodiak) is a brief work about the ecosystem of Kodiak Island in Alaska. Published in Moscow in 1805, not long after the first Russian settlement in Alaska, the book covers the general topography, flora, fauna, and climate of the island. Kodiak was a popular topic among upper-class Russians in the early 19th century, because of the establishment of a Russian Orthodox mission on the island in 1794 and the commercial work of the Russian-American Company in the region from 1799. The native people are very briefly described in the book, which ends with a short description of the establishment of the mission on Kodiak. The book was digitized at the National Library of Russia in the early 2000s for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project.
