The Picturesque Sceneries in Kioto
Description
This small book, published in 1907, contains a collection of photographs of Kyoto landscapes and buildings taken during the Meiji Era (1868‒1912) by Kobayashi Chujiro (1869‒1951). They include images of temples and shrines, such as Ginkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera, which are among the 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city. Most of the buildings still exist, including Nijo Castle, another UNESCO site, which mostly dates from the 17th century, and the Kyoto National Museum, then called the Imperial Household Museum of Kyoto. The volume also includes photographs of urban areas and maikos (apprentice geikos) wearing colorful kimonos.
