Scenes in the Eastern Capital of Japan
The book presented here is a collection of photographs by pioneer Japanese photographer, printer, and publisher Ogawa Kazumasa (1860‒1929), which was issued in 1911, one year before the end of the Meiji Era (1868‒1912). It opens with portraits of the Emperor Meiji as a young man in military dress and of a young Empress Shoken. It contains photographs of urban areas, such as Marunouchi and Ginza and includes photographs of some structures that have since been rebuilt, such as the Kabuki-za Theater and the Imperial Theater.
