Summary
- This 16-page illustrated booklet issued by the Metro Pictures Corporation is a prospectus describing the making of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a film based on the novel of the same name by Spanish author Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. The novel was published in Spain in 1916 with the title Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis and in English translation in 1918. Metro claimed that it was "the most widely read book of all time, excepting the Bible." It tells the story of two sons-in-law of a powerful Argentine landowner, one French and one German, who find themselves fighting on opposite sides during World War I. The booklet includes a list of the cast of the film; a summary of statistics about the "million dollar production;" a summary of the plot of Blasco's novel; a description of how the film was made; photographic portraits of the main actors and actresses in the film; and a gallery of notable scenes. Four of the illustrations are in color. Filmed in Hollywood and released in 1921, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was a blockbuster that turned Rudolf Valentino into a major star in the world of silent film. Valentino, who plays the landowner's French grandson Julio Desnoyers, is pictured in the booklet alongside Alice Terry, also a star of the silent film era and the wife of director Rex Ingram.
