Summary
- Ilya Yastrebov (1867-1928), who later became Archbishop Innokenty of Astrakhan, was a scholar and professor at several Russian theological academies. As a student, he chose to study the missionary efforts of Vladimir, Archbishop of Kazan and Sviyazhsk (born Ivan Stepanovich Petrov, 1828-97). Vladimir served as head of the Altay Spiritual Mission during the period 1867-83 and later became bishop of the Siberian dioceses of Biysk and Tomsk before his appointment to the archbishopric. He also wrote widely on the work of Russian Orthodox missionaries in Siberia. Yastrebov was never a missionary himself, but he taught the history of missions and traveled several times to the area around Astrakhan to study missionary work. He also learned the language of the Kalmyk people, who lived in the region, and translated a number of religious texts into Kalmyk. This publication about the missionary work of Vladimir is the text of a speech given by Yastrebov in Kazan in 1898 in defense of his doctoral dissertation. The work is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. It was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s.
