Summary

  • Tidningar Utgifne Af et Sällskap i Åbo (Newspapers published by a society in Turku) was the first newspaper published in Finland. It was issued by the Aurora Society, a secret Finnish literary society founded at the Royal Academy of Turku in 1770. Most of Finland was at that time under Swedish rule, and the newspaper was in Swedish. (Åbo is the Swedish name for Turku.) The newspaper appeared between 1771 and 1785. It aimed to cover multiple topics, for example language, geography, history, and science, both for the amusement and education of as large an audience as possible. Presented here is the first issue of the newspaper, dated January 15, 1771. It contains an article pointing out similarities between the Hungarian, Sami, and Finnish languages, and the obvious differences with Swedish.
