About this Item

Title

  • Commentary on the Hebrew Bible by Rashi.

Other Title

  • Bibelkommentar

Summary

  • There are numerous commentaries on the Hebrew Bible that were produced by Jewish scholars. One of the most famous of these scholars was Rashi (Shelomoh ben Yitshak, 1040-1105) from Troyes, in northern France, responsible for the commentary preserved in this two-volume manuscript. The text, written in three columns, does not cover the Book of Proverbs and does not contain the text of the Bible itself. It also includes a number of texts not connected with the commentary. The majority of the manuscript is taken up by the commentary of Rashi, augmented by passages from the Midrash and additions of other commentators. The commentary on the major prophets and on some books of the Hagiographa (the section of the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Writings, comprised of Ruth, Psalms, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, Daniel, Esther, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Chronicles) is written by other authors, chiefly by Josef Kara, an 11th-century disciple of Rashi's. The manuscript is of outstanding importance on account of its iconography. It is the oldest illuminated Hebrew manuscript of German origin, unique both in its style and in the program of its illustration. The 17 color miniatures and ornaments reveal a clear connection with the late-Romanesque Christian iconography in illuminated Latin manuscripts in use at this time in the region around Würzburg, Bavaria. Written by two different scribes by 1233, it became part of the collection of Johann Jakob Fugger in the 16th century. In 1571 it was sold to the Duke of Bavaria, Albrecht V, and it has remained in the Munich Court Library, predecessor of the present-day Bavarian State Library, ever since.
