La primera edición del Nuevo Testamento en siríaco fue posible gracias al patrocinio de Fernando I, a quien se dedica un largo prefacio al comienzo del libro. Johann Albrecht Widmanstetter (1506-1557) and Moses of Mardin, on whose handwriting the Syriac type for the book was based, were the forces behind the work. This Syriac type was produced by Kaspar Kraft under the direction of the French Orientalist Guillaume Postel (1510-1581). Esta edición del Nuevo Testamento tiene Santiago, la primera epístola de Pedro y de Juan, pero no las otras Epístolas generales o el Apocalipsis. Several woodcuts with Hapsburg motifs and Syriac and Latin inscriptions ornament the book, and facing the beginning of the Gospel of John is a unique woodcut of the crucifixion and the Kabbalistic Sephirot. El libro tenía un objetivo litúrgico, como se refleja en el índice al final de la obra (en siríaco y latín) de las lecturas del leccionario.
