About this Item

Title

  • Forest. Anita Dying.

Summary

  • This painting depicting Italian patriots during the wars of Italian independence is excerpted from a multi-scene, "moving" panorama that is more than 1.2 meters tall and 110 meters long. Giant paintings such as these were a popular form of entertainment in the 19th century. The panorama scroll would be unrolled slowly as a narrator described the action. In its entirety, this panorama chronicles the life and exploits of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian freedom fighter. The work is attributed to John James Story (1827-1900), an artist from Nottingham, England, but the differing quality of the work from one part of the panorama to another suggests that it may have been the work of several artists. Art historians speculate that Story had never been to Italy, but had seen images from the country depicted in newspapers and reproduced them. The panorama is part of the Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection at the Brown University Library, the foremost American collection devoted to the history and iconography of soldiers and soldiering, and one of the world's largest collections devoted to the study of military and naval uniforms.
