Summary

  • The Thereza Christina Maria collection is composed of 21,742 photos assembled by Emperor Pedro II (1825-91) throughout his life and donated by him to the National Library of Brazil. The collection covers a wide variety of subjects. It documents the achievements of Brazil and Brazilians in the 19th century and also includes many photographs of Europe, Africa, and North America. In 1868, photographer Augusto Riedel accompanied Luis Augusto, Duke of Saxe, son-in-law of Emperor Pedro II, on an expedition into the interior of Brazil. During the expedition, the group visited Peter Wilhelm Lund (1801-80) at his home in Lagoa Santa. There they saw the tomb of Peter Andreas Brandt (1791-1862), a Norwegian artist who worked for many years with Lund as the illustrator of his work. Lund, a Danish naturalist, spent most of his life in Brazil. While working in the state of Minas Gerais, he discovered the remains of Ice Age animals and early humans. Over the course of his career, he excavated and identified more than 20,000 bones of extinct species.
